Possible pipe bomb found near Westmoore Fire Department

A suspicious item was found near the Westmoore Fire Department on Monday.

Around noon, authorities were notified that a North Carolina Department of Correction inmate found the suspicious item. When the object was found, the inmate crew was cleaning litter along Dover Church Road in the Westmoore community near the Town of Robbins.

According to members of the Westmoore Fire Department, the man notified his corrections officer, who then called it in.

Westmoore Fire Department and the Moore County Sheriff’s Office responded quickly to the scene. Chief Deputy Richard Maness with the Moore County Sheriff’s Department would not confirm what the item was.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we isolated the area and had specialists ensure the item was safe for collection, said Maness. “We are still investigating the nature and origin of the item.”

Authorities closed Dover Church Road from Comer Road to Mack Road. Dan Road was also closed at Bascom Chapel Road. The roads were closed until 8 p.m.

This developing story will be updated when more information becomes available.
