Bringing an extensive background in classical Christian education on a local and national level, Dell Cook will assume the role of head of school at Sandhills Classical Christian School (SCCS) with the 2020-2021 school year.
Cook comes to SCCS from Cary Christian School in Cary, North Carolina. During Cook’s 20-year tenure at Cary Christian, the school grew from an enrollment of 200 students to become the nation’s third-largest classical Christian school with 800 students and a staff of more than 100.
Under Cook’s leadership, Cary Christian built a multipurpose field house, developed plans for an athletic and performing arts center and raised more than $5 million for facilities and educational programs.
“Sandhills Classical Christian School is on track to become a premier classical Christian school,” said William Fields, SCCS board chairperson who announced Cook’s new position to school families on November 1.
“With Mr. Cook’s experience on a local and national level, we are confident he can lead the way.”
Dell has served Cary Christian in a wide variety of roles including headmaster, rhetoric school principal, athletic director, football coach, basketball coach, cross country coach and golf coach. He taught fourth through twelfth grade in Old and New Testament Bible, theology, apologetics, history, Greek, and Hebrew.
Nationally, Cook has been instrumental in the country’s renewal of classical and Christian education by serving on the national board of the Association of Classical and Christian Schools and the board of advisors for the Classical Learning Test, a college entrance exam.
He also consults and writes curricula for several classical and Christian schools around the country and serves on the faculty of Worldview Academy, a national ministry introducing students to and developing them in biblical worldview.
Cook has a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Appalachian State University, a master of divinity from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and a master of theology from Reformed Theological Seminary.
Cook and his wife Ginny have three children: Katie, senior at UNC Chapel Hill; Lauren, a sophomore at North Carolina School of the Arts and Andrew, a sophomore at Cary Christian School.
At the completion of his teaching duties at Cary Christian, Dell will join SCCS on June 1, 2020.
Founded in 1999 with five kindergarteners in a local church, Sandhills Classical Christian School is now one of four fully accredited Classical Christian schools in North Carolina, educating more than 300 students in preschool through high school with the mission of graduating citizens of excellence who observe, think, and articulate with humility, reason and clarity for the glory of God.
The school currently operates on several campuses in Whispering Pines, Southern Pines and Pinehurst and is building a central campus on 60 acres of land the school owns in Whispering Pines.
