If you have a child interested in lacrosse, you now have another option in the area. Sandhills Lacrosse Association (SLA) is based just down from Union Pines High School.

If you have driven by New Covenant Fellowship Church, you have probably seen them on the practice fields. They actually got their start on those fields.

SLA Men’s Coach, Carlson Chow said, “The minister there agreed to let some of the boys use the field beside the church to play lacrosse when they expressed interest. A local farmer cleared the land and the rest is history, as they say.”

Their vision statement really defines who they are. “The Sandhills Lacrosse Association is a community-based tax exempt non-profit charitable organization that aspires to grow youth, high school, collegiate, and adult lacrosse programs in the Sandhills/greater Moore County, NC area whose athletes are recognized for their scholarship, service, leadership, and achievements in the community, in the classroom, and on the field of competition.”

SLA has both a men’s and women’s program. The men’s team are the Warriors. They are coached by Jason Friedman and Carlson Chow. The ladies’ team are called the Lady Warriors and are coached by Leslie Brians, Tim Ripley, and Jamie Moses. The Lady Warriors are newer to the organization and played their first game in February. Both teams are doing very well and are continuing to grow.

They have players from 8th through 12th grade, and they come from all over Moore County. Players must reside in Moore County and not attend a school that already has a lacrosse team. Currently, Pinecrest is the only school with a lacrosse program. SLA welcomes home school students, and they accept new players throughout the season.

Practices are held Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:15 and Saturdays at 1:00. These practices run 90 minutes in length. Their season runs from late February through mid-April. If you are thinking about joining, they encourage potential players and parents to attend a practice and talk to a coach.

What these coaches strive to achieve is far more than just great players. They hope to develop in them the qualities of leadership, community service, teamwork, scholarship, sportsmanship, integrity, and excellence. Besides practice, they also do community service projects and other team building experiences. They recently worked on promoting the school bonds issue in the community and a number of the players were at the Shamrock-n-Roll.

Sandhills Lacrosse is gaining attention across the region. Saturday, they hosted the Lacrosse Clinic & Sandhills Shootout Exhibition at the NAV Center. Coaches and players from N.C. State University men’s and women’s club lacrosse programs came to coach, teach, and mentor.
