Saturday morning crash impedes traffic

A collision on U.S. 1 brought Saturday morning traffic to a crawl in Southern Pines. First responders were called to the intersection of Saunders Boulevard and U.S. 1 to investigate the wreckage of a Honda CR-V and a Honda sedan blocking the intersection just before 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 30.

Traffic had to be rerouted from northbound U.S. 1, and Saunders Boulevard was shut down while authorities worked to investigate the scene of the crash and clear away both the vehicles and the debris. Traffic was rerouted for over an hour, bringing commuters on northbound U.S. 1 to a near-total halt.

It was reported that several people were injured in the accident. Their conditions are unknown at this time.

Both vehicles sustained heavy front-end damage and had to be towed away from the scene.

At the scene of the crash, first responders worked to clear broken glass and shattered fragments of the vehicles from the roadway.

Responding to the scene were Moore County EMS, the Southern Pines Fire Department, and the Southern Pines Police Department.
