Connie Lovell has been named to the Sandhills Community College Board of Trustees. Her nomination was approved – by a vote of 7-0 – at the Moore County School Board’s Monday, May 11 meeting.
Lovell’s term will start July 1.
An interior design professional, Lovell, of Pinehurst, has owned a residential and commercial design studio for 25 years. She’s a graduate of Stephens College in Missouri.
“She’s demonstrated how to get things done,” Libby Carter, the board chair, said during the virtual session.
The consent agenda for the meeting was approved after a vote of 6-1. Among items included in the agenda was installation of camera surveillance at Aberdeen Elementary. The security equipment is deemed key to protecting the property through transition and for providing safety via monitoring when students begin classes for the 2020-21 school year.
District staff advised the board to accept a bid from Netsource Educational Technologies under which that company would get more than $82,100 for security cameras and installation. Netsource has done similar work at McDeeds Creek Elementary and at other schools across the state.
The board also gave the green light following a staff recommendation regarding bids for cabling at Southern Pines Elementary. Bids were received from North Carolina Sound of Goldsboro, Interconnect Products and Services, Netsource, and A3 Communications.
Interconnect’s bid, for $154,900, was recommended and approved. The bid from A3 Communications, for more than $192,500, was closest, as far as cost, to Interconnect’s offer. Interconnect has provided services at schools throughout North Carolina.
The job of replacing the mechanical units at Sandhills Farm Life Elementary goes to AirRich Heating and Cooling, which came in with a bid of $120,225. The budget estimate for the work is $324,000, so there’s a savings of $203,775. Moore County will pay for the project through the school capital improvement fund.
Upon recommendation from the superintendent, the board approved a motion to renew expiring contracts for food, supplies and chemicals for the 2020-21 school year.
