SPPD releases statement on school shooting threat

The Moore County Board of Education met Feb. 7 for its business meeting and appointed a committee to review a book complaint.

A discussion on the need for a review committee came after a Jan. 26 complaint that a media center book has inappropriate content. The request for its removal was denied.

The full complaint may be viewed here and here.

“Teaching children about androgen blockers and sex changes before they’re even taught basic human biology and anatomy should be a crime,” wrote James Pedersen, of Carthage, in his complaint about “George” by Alex Gino.

“George” is at Union Pines High School and McDeeds Creek Elementary School.

The 17 committee members include a high school student. The student is Karson Van Scoyoc, a senior at Pinecrest High School, and is a member of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council.

Members were chosen from the entire school district and include principals, teachers and parents. Parents who were not routinely involved in school activities were selected.

The Community Media and Technology Advisory Committee may be viewed here.

The committee will meet virtually, and citizens will be notified of meeting times and may log in to view. The committee will report its findings to the board on March 7.

“George” by Alex Gino may be previewed here.
