The Moore County School Board received an update Tuesday on the progress of new school construction.

The new Aberdeen Elementary School, located on Highway 5, had an original contract completion date of January 24, 2020. The contractor has informed the district that the schedule has slipped to March 6, 2020. The contractor has submitted a recovery schedule to demonstrate how they will complete construction by the original date. The construction is on budget and has not used any contingency funds.

The new Southern Pines Elementary School, located on Morganton Road, is scheduled to finish construction mid-September 2020, with a planned opening in January 2021. The contractor is currently on schedule and meeting all critical path milestones. The project has not used any contingency funding.

A notice to proceed was issued for the new Pinehurst Elementary School on October 15. The project duration is 511 days with substantial completion by March 8, 2021. The construction company has applied to the state for the demolition permits of select buildings to begin the removal of buildings. The school is being built on the same property of the old school on Dundee Road.

The design team omitted from the project bid the necessary abatement of asbestos in two of the existing buildings. District staff is in the process of obtaining bids for removal of the materials and will present the bid results and a recommendation to the board during their December meeting.

According to Moore County Schools Executive Officer of Operations John Birath, the project and the cost of asbestos removal will be approximately $50,000.

McDeeds Creek Elementary School is on progress for substantial completion of the building by Thanksgiving. There are some site deficiencies that cannot be corrected until spring 2020. The contractor is doing a back check of deficiencies and providing system training. The final road safety improvements are scheduled for January 2020.

The North Moore High School additions and renovation are scheduled to be completed August 8 of 2020 with the contractor on schedule.

Board Chairman Helena Wallin-Miller expressed her thanks for the monthly updates, which allows the board and community to keep up to date on the process.
