Sheriff warns scam targeting residents

Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields is warning residents about a scam that has been reported to the sheriff’s office after someone called a resident posing as an out-of-county deputy demanding money.

Fields said in a news advisory law enforcement will never call the public asking for money in lieu of an arrest.

“We have just been alerted that a Moore County resident was contacted by a person identifying himself to be a deputy with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and demanding payment of monies in order to avoid one of their arrest warrants,” said Fields. “THIS IS A SCAM!!”

The Moore County Sheriff’s Office has been in contact with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office regarding the situation.

“Moore County citizens are reminded to call the Sheriff’s Office at 910-947-2931 with any questions or concerns,” said Fields.
