Sheriff warns of scam circulating the county

The Moore County Sheriff’s Office has put out a warning on social media of a scam that is circulating the county.

Sheriff Ronnie Fields said on Thursday that multiple scams have been reported to his office.

People are calling citizens falsely stating they are representatives with Duke Energy saying “you have thirty minutes to pay your bill, or your power will be shut off.”

Fields said to hang up the phone and call the number listed on your utility bill.

Below are tips from the sheriff’s office:

Duke Energy will never initiate a threatening phone call demanding payment now or loss of service;

Duke Energy will never insist on a specific type of payment (ex: wire transfer, prepaid debit card, mobile banking app);

Scammers try to get you to act fast and not take the time to analyze the situation.
