Silver Alert issued as crews search for missing Carthage man

Update: Michael Douglas Hartsell has been safely located.


A Silver Alert has been issued for a Carthage man after he went missing Thursday evening. Moore County Sheriff’s Department and emergency crews responded to a missing man at 489 Murdocksville  Road just outside of Carthage.

Moore County Public Safety set up a command center at Summerhill Baptist Church. It lies on the other side of the wooded area by his home where he was last seen. The N.C. State Highway Patrol helicopter has responded and is aiding in the scene as well as K9 teams. Multiple agencies are participating in the search.

The N.C. Center for Missing Persons issued a Silver Alert for:

Michael Douglas Hartsell, white male, age 68.
5’8″, 250 pounds, hazel eyes, short gray hair.
Distinguishing Physical Characteristics: Does walk with a cane but left cane at home and may be using a stick. Doesn’t walk very well.

Clothing Description: Unknown, possibly naked.

Hartsell is believed to be suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s.
