St. Joseph of the Pines has completed a $2.3 million renovation of the clubhouse at Belle Meade
that significantly improves wellness for its current residents and positions the Life Plan
Community for the incoming wave of Baby Boomers.

“Our future residents are extremely savvy consumers and wellness is a top priority for them,”
said Lori Portfleet, president for St. Joseph of the Pines. “So, we need to be prepared when they
make the transition to our community. We don’t want them to feel like they’re settling or moving
backwards.

“Our emphasis on wellness is probably the most critical factor to our future success. It’s all about
mind, body and spirit.”

Research shows that wellness is the key to older adults keeping their health, mental skills and
quality of life.

“It’s not just about being physically active, you can also maintain or improve your health through
the social, intellectual, emotional, spiritual and purposeful living aspects of wellness,” said
Stephen Phillips, executive director of independent living and wellness for St. Joseph of the
Pines. “We focus on things that encourage active living and make people happy. Having a
purpose is an important part of staying alive.”
