Southern Pines purchase 157-acre tract adjacent Reservoir Park

Reservoir Park is set to double in size now that the Southern Pines Town Council is moving ahead with the purchase of 157 acres of adjacent land. The measure to acquire the land off Pee Dee Road for $1.65 million came after a public hearing on Tuesday.  In a special meeting Thursday, the council voted to finalize the contract to purchase the land, house and buildings described as the Whitehall Tract, owned by Barbara Sherman.

Documents presented in a virtual meeting state, “The Town of Southern Pines proposes to acquire land and associated structures located between Pee Dee Road and the Reservoir Park for the purpose of expanding its recreational assets and conserving said property from further development.”

Popular for walking, biking, fishing and boating, Reservoir Park is 165 acres in size. The main feature is a 95-acre lake in the center of the park. Other facilities include a boat ramp and docks, restrooms, picnic shelters and a spillway. Exercise stations and seating areas can be found along the trail around the lake.

The Southern Pines Recreation and Parks Department will now begin to study how best to incorporate the mostly wooded land into their long-range plans.
