SP to honor local trailblazers at inaugural Black Women’s History Month celebration

Community leaders and residents will gather to celebrate the architects of progress and pillars of the community at the Inaugural Black Women’s History Month Celebration on Saturday, April 25. This landmark event is hosted by Concerned Citizens for Community Action and coordinated by Tannelaine Wilson.

The celebration will take place at the Southern Pines Land & Housing Trust from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., honoring local icons who have shaped the political, educational, and social landscape of North Carolina.

The program features a keynote address by Deborah Maxwell, President of the North Carolina NAACP, alongside distinguished guests Judge Tron Ross and Destiny Gregg, Political Director for U.S. Senate candidate Roy Cooper.

Honoring a Legacy of Leadership

The highlight of the afternoon is the recognition of local luminaries whose careers span decades of public service:

Jackie McLean Hoke: NAACP President and Council Member

Wilma Laney: Former Aberdeen Commissioner

Almetta Armstrong: Civil Rights Icon, Educator, and Community Leader

Dr. Maxine Brown: Accomplished School Principal

Kamaaria Mackins: Recent Law School Graduate and rising legal advocate

“This event isn’t just a ceremony; it’s a long-overdue recognition of the brilliance and resilience Black women bring to our community every day,” said Dr. Isaac Jenkins, CEO of Concerned Citizens for Community Action. “We are standing on the shoulders of giants like Almetta Armstrong to inspire the next generation, represented by leaders like Kamaaria Mackins.”

This local observance aligns with the International Black Women’s History Month movement founded by Sha Battle, aiming to bridge visibility gaps through unity and recognition.
