Sports wrap-up: Union Pines wrestling wins dual tournament

Union Pines Wrestling won the dual tournament and won the conference meet last week. 

Union Pines High School:

Wrestling:

On Tuesday, the Vikings defeated Scotland 72-4 and defeated Southern Lee 76-6 in their conference match. 

On Saturday, the Vikings competed in the Pirates Dual Tournament. They won every match making them the champions of the tournament.

The Vikings are now 4-0 in the conference and 21-3 overall for the season. 

Men’s Basketball 12-2 (2-1):

The Vikings defeated Scotland in a close conference game 47-45 on Tuesday. Wednesday, the Vikings hosted Randleman in a non-conference game and won 56-30. They were not able to keep the momentum going Friday when they traveled to Richmond to take on the undefeated conference rival. The Vikings lost 71-65 giving them their first conference loss. Conference play is in full swing and will have two conference games this week. 

Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Home County (7-2) conference game. 

Friday at 7 p.m. versus Southern Lee (1-10) conference game. 

Women’s Basketball 7-2 (1-2):

The Lady Vikings were not able to pull off a win in their busy schedule last week. On Tuesday, at Scotland, the Vikings lost 58-50 in a conference game. On Wednesday, they hosted Randleman and lost 58-47. Friday, at Richmond, the Vikings lost 58-38 in their second conference game of the week. They will have two conference games this week. 

Tuesday 6 p.m. at Hoke County (1-12) conference game. 

Friday 6 p.m. versus Southern Lee (3-6) conference game. 

Father Capodanno High School:

Basketball:

The Grunts finished their first basketball season in school history. 

On Wednesday, the men’s and women’s basketball teams traveled to St. Thomas More Academy for their final game. The men lost 52-46 putting them at 0-8 for their season. The women finished their season at 1-3 with a loss 71-13. 

North Moore:

Friday 7:30 at Cummings (8-0) conference game.

Women’s Basketball 1-6 (0-2):

Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Bartlett Yancey (2-5) conference game. 

O’Neal:

Men’s Basketball 8-5 (1-1):

Friday, the Falcons lost a conference game at 48-29 at Trinity Academy. They will play three games this week, and two are important conference games. 

Tuesday 7 p.m. at Salem Baptist Christian (6-7) conference game. 

Wednesday 6 p.m. at Thales Academy (4-6).

Friday 7 p.m. versus Carolina Friends (6-4) conference game. 

Women’s Basketball 10-3 (2-1):

The Lady Falcons are sitting in first place in the conference. Friday, they were able to seal a big conference win at Trinity Academy 60-21. They will have three games this week, and two will be conference games. 

Tuesday 5:30 p.m. at Salem Baptist Christian (1-9) conference game. 

Wednesday 4:30 p.m. at Thales Academy (2-5).

Friday 5:30 p.m. versus Carolina Friends (3-4) conference game. 

Swim Team:

The Falcons men and women’s swim team will have their first meet Monday afternoon. They have not competed since before winter break. Time and location TBA. 

Pinecrest:

Wrestling:

The Patriots had a conference duel last week and won both. 

PC v Hoke 48-23.

PC v Lee sr 82-0.

On Saturday, they traveled to Jack Britt for the Boneyard Bash Tournament, where they were named champions.

Matt Rowland, Cooper Ogden, and Robert Hyder were individual champs. They also had two runner-ups, three third-place and one fourth and fifth-place.

Men’s Basketball 9-4 (2-1):

The Patriots put up big numbers against conference rivals Southern Lee and Lee County last week, winning both of their conference games. On Wednesday, against Southern Lee, the Patriots won 70-29. On Friday, the Patriots defeated Lee County 79-36. With the Patriots sitting in the middle of their conference rankings, the two games this week become more important. Hosting second place Hoke County will be no easy task, but a win could boost morale before taking on conference and county rivals Union Pines on the Jan. 18.

Friday 7:30 p.m. versus Hoke County (7-2) conference game. 

Women’s Basketball 7-4 (1-1):

The Lady Patriots also put up big numbers against conference rival Southern Lee on Wednesday. They were able to get their first conference win of the season winning 64-24. 

On Friday, Lady Patriots traveled to Lee County for a conference game. The score has not been recorded at the time of this article. 

Tuesday 6 p.m. at Scotland (9-2) first place in conference. 

Friday 6 p.m. versus Hoke (1-12) conference game.

Sandhills Community College 12-6 (2-0):

The Flyers drop their sixth game of the season last week but were able to turn that around winning their first two conference games of the season. On Tuesday, the Flyers lost to non-conference opponent USC Salkehatchie 104-91. Friday and Saturday, they traveled to Dabney S. Lancaster CC for back-to-back conference games which led to back-to-back wins. On Friday, the Flyers won 107-62 and Saturday 100-55. The Flyers hope to continue their conference win streak going this week with three conference games.

Wednesday 7 p.m. versus Central Carolina conference game. 

Saturday 3 p.m. at Oxford Cc of Emory University conference game (no spectators allowed).

Sunday 1 p.m. at Oxford CC of Emory University conference game (no spectators allowed).
