Police department promotes three to rank of sergeant

The Southern Pines Police Department Wednesday announced two captain promotions.

Kyle Marsh, a 20 year veteran of law enforcement, will be promoted to the rank of Administrative Captain effective February 1. Captain Marsh is responsible for command, control, and oversight of the Administration and Communications Divisions in his new position.

Prior to this promotion, Captain Marsh served as a Lieutenant with oversight of the Investigations Division of the Southern Pines Police Department. Captain Marsh received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia Southern University and an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Sandhills Community College. Captain Marsh has completed the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association Executive, Command, and Supervisory Institute.

In his tenure at the Southern Pines Police Department, Captain Marsh has taken on several collateral duties to include: serving as a member of the Special Response Team, Canine Handler, certified General Instructor, Lead Firearms Instructor, Rapid Deployment Instructor, Field Training Officer, and the agency Training Coordinator.

Robert Heaton, a 20 year veteran of law enforcement, will be promoted to the rank of Operations Captain effective February 1. Captain Heaton is responsible for command, control, and oversight of the Patrol and Investigations Divisions in his new position.

Prior to this promotion, Captain Heaton served as a Division Lieutenant to manage the Southern Pines Police Department’s Directed Patrol Unit. Captain Heaton received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Mt. Olive University and an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Richmond Community College. Captain Heaton has completed the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association Executive, Command, and Supervisory Institute.

In his tenure at the Southern Pines Police Department, Captain Heaton has taken on several collateral duties to include: serving as the Special Response Team Commander, certified General Instructor, Firearms Instructor, Physical Fitness Instructor, Driver Instructor, SCAT instructor, and a Field Training Officer.
