SPPD K-9 dies after being struck by car

The Southern Pines Police Department is mourning the loss of one of their own. K-9 Officer Jaxx passed away after being struck by a car on U.S. Highway 1 in Southern Pines Saturday.

Police Chief Bob Temme made the announcement on social media.

The 6-year-old Labrador Retriever was administered his Oath of Office in 2017 by former Southern Pines Mayor David McNeill. Jaxx came from Serbia.

Officer Greg Powers was Jaxx’s handler and “family member.”

“In his decorated career with the Southern Pines Police Department, K-9 Jaxx was a regular visitor to our schools, scout troops and countless other community events,” said Temme. “K-9 Jaxx had the unwavering ability to socialize with the general public and upon command engage in the role for which he was trained.

“Always believe that God has reserved a final resting place for our all our law enforcement officers to include our K-9’s. Thank you Jaxx for your selfless service to others. We now have another guardian protecting us from heaven. Rest in Peace, loved, and faithful public servant, we will continue the watch from here.”
