There were no serious injuries reported after an SUV plunged down an embankment in Southern Pines Sunday morning. The accident occurred just after 7 a.m. on U.S. Hwy 1 just south of Morganton Road.

The call initially came into 911 by a passerby as “a vehicle off the roadway,” however, emergency crews had difficulty locating the accident. Shortly afterward, another call came into 911 with a more precise location, and the vehicle was located.

The driver of a Toyota SUV heading north on U.S. 1 had run off the right side of the road, struck a roadside sign and plunged over the embankment coming to rest in the wooded area below.

An additional rescue crew out of Aberdeen Fire & Rescue was paged and responded due to the location and mechanism of the accident, but they were later canceled.

Emergency crews had to bring the victims up the embankment using a stokes basket. No one suffered life-threatening injuries in the accident.

Southern Pines Police were on the scene and are investigating the cause of the accident.

Rockwell Towing removed the vehicle from the scene.

Responding to the accident were Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, Southern Pines Police Department, and Rockwell Towing.
