Traffic stop turns into drug bust

A Rockingham woman was placed at the Moore County Detention Center under a $50,000 secured bond after being arrested when the vehicle she was driving in was pulled over during a traffic stop.

“On November 4, 2022, Deputies with the Moore County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop in the 7200 block of U.S. Highway 1 in Southern Pines,” said Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields in a news advisory. “During the traffic stop, Deputies conducted a search of the vehicle. As a result of the search, Deputies located cocaine, oxycodone, buprenorphine, and naloxone, marijuana, items of drug paraphernalia, a firearm, and $2,065.60 in currency.”

The news release did not state why the vehicle was pulled over.

Jamie Newton, 41, is facing charges of trafficking opium or heroin by possession, trafficking opium or heroin by transport, felony possession of cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver schedule II controlled substance, possession with intent to sell and deliver schedule III controlled substance, maintaining a vehicle/dwell place for controlled substances, simple possession of schedule II controlled substance, possession of marijuana up to ½ ounce, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana paraphernalia.

The suspect is expected in court on Dec. 1 and is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
