Two people were airlifted after a crash outside of Southern Pines on Saturday. The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 1 at Youngs Road.

According to N.C. State Highway Patrol, a Mitsubishi Mirage was traveling northbound on U.S. 1 when a Ford Mustang pulled out from Youngs Road in front of the Mirage.

The driver of the Mirage swerved to avoid the Mustang but collided into the front driver’s side of the Ford. The impact caused the Mirage to flip onto its driver’s side before coming to a stop.

First responders say the two female occupants of the Mirage were airlifted in two separate helicopters to a trauma center with nonlife threatening injuries. The male occupant of the Mustang was uninjured.

Troopers say the driver of the Mustang will be charged with failure to yield the right of way.

Responding to the scene were Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue, Southern Pines Fire Department, Moore County EMS, Moore County Sheriff’s Department, and N.C. State Highway Patrol.
