Upcoming road closure for U.S. Open

Beginning Wednesday, August 14, the U.S. Highway 1 south bound ramp will be closed at Midland Road in Southern Pines for construction. The closure will last for 16 days with an re-open date on Friday, August 30.

The Town of Southern Pines announced on their website the detour route.

“US 1 SB traffic needing to access Midland Rd East will continue on US 1 SB to the next exit (Pennsylvania Ave),” said the town.  “After exiting right onto exit, traffic will need to turn left onto Pennsylvania Ave.  After crossing over US 1, traffic will turn left onto US 1 NB on ramp.  Follow US 1 NB to next exit Midland Rd. Traffic may also use Pennsylvania Ave. to access Southern Pines.”

Work began at the beginning of summer on a project to construct a roundabout at the intersection of Midland Road and Central Drive which requires road closures.

The project also calls for improving the nearby Midland Road interchange with U.S. 1. The overall goal is to improve safety on this stretch of Midland Road, where traffic is expected to nearly double to an average of 28,000 daily trips by 2040.

The $2.8 million project began in early June, and Barnhill Contracting Co. is expected to complete the construction by Oct. 1.

The contractor also closed Midland Road on both sides of the intersection with Central Drive from June 17 until Aug. 31.
