Vehicle strikes tree on Morganton Road

A driver escaped with her life after slamming into a tree on W Morganton Road early Sunday afternoon. Around noon, first responders received a call alerting them to an SUV that had not only struck a tree but that potentially had the driver trapped inside.

The crash occurred mere feet from the intersection of W Morganton Road and SW Broad Street, near The Sly Fox Pub in Southern Pines. The driver of the Toyota lost control of the vehicle and crossed two lanes of traffic before smashing into a tree.

As a result, the Highlander sustained heavy front-end damage, but the driver was able to be safely removed from her vehicle.

The driver was the only occupant of the vehicle at the time of the crash and was transported to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital after being reviewed by EMS.

Law enforcement was on the scene to investigate the cause of the crash and safely divert traffic around the wreck. First responders worked quickly to move debris from the roadway and clear the scene, while Rockwell Towing arrived to disentangle the wreckage and remove the Toyota.

Responding to the scene were the Southern Pines Fire Department, Southern Pines Police Department, and Moore County EMS.
