There has been a voluntary recall from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. If you have a product provided by Womack Army Medical Center Pharmacy dispensed after December 1, 2016, please return it to the pharmacy for an alternative equivalent product or have your provider write an alternative prescription.
The voluntary recall is for all liquid products manufactured by PharmaTech and distributed by Leader Brand, Major Pharmaceuticals, and Rugby Laboratories because of possible Burkholderia cepacia (B. cepacia) contamination, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
These products, which include various drugs and dietary supplements intended for use in infants and children, have been linked to a PharmaTech-manufactured product connected to severe adverse event reports of B. cepacia infections in patients. They are recalling all liquid products produced from October 20, 2015 through July 15, 2016 as a precautionary measure.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration states, “If a product contains B. cepacia, its use could result in infections in patients with compromised immune systems and in patients with chronic lung conditions such as cystic fibrosis. Some of these infections may be serious or even life-threatening in the at risk patient population.”
If you have any additional questions regarding this recall, please contact Rugby Laboratories at 1-800-645-2158 or Major Pharmaceuticals at 1-800-616-2471 or Leader at 1-800-200-6313.
