A woman and her dog died in a house fire on Christmas day.

The blaze broke out around 2:00 p.m. on McFadyen Lane in Lakeview just outside of Vass. When firefighters arrived on the scene there was heavy smoke showing from the two-story residence and neighbors were unsure if anyone was still in the house.

Fire crews quickly entered the home to locate any people inside while another crew battled the fire from the ground floor and exterior of the home.

After clearing the ground floor in a search for victims, they went up to the second floor and located the female victim and her dog. Both were already deceased when located.

Chief Deputy Frank Rodriguez said the victim’s next of kin has been notified and released the victim’s name as 48-year-old Brenda Brown.  Brown has two small children who were away with their father at the time of the fire.

Water points were set up due to the distance to fire hydrants. This allowed firefighters access to water to contain the fire. The firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in a short period of time. Once the fire was out, the fire department used fans to vent smoke from the structure allowing investigators access to the scene.

The fire remains under investigation, said Rodriquez, and the body has been sent to the state’s Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
