A quick thinking driver managed to escape serious injury when her car caught fire Wednesday evening.

The driver reported she was heading south on U.S. Highway 1 past Pinebluff when she saw a sudden puff of smoke come out the engine compartment. The motorist immediately pulled the Honda sedan off the left hand side of the road and quickly exited the vehicle.

By the time the driver stopped the car, flames had begun appearing and quickly overtook the car.  Several cars that were behind her reported several small explosions coming from the vehicle seconds after she fled the sedan.

The plumes of smoke could been seen from a great distance. Smoke and flames consumed the car before the firefighters arrived.  Firefighters quickly got the fire out, but the Honda was a total loss.

Both lanes of US#1 southbound were shutdown near Ryder Cup Boulevard while firefighters worked. After about 30 minutes, they had one lane of traffic open.

Authorities did not state the cause of the fire. Responding to the scene were Pinebluff Fire & Rescue, Pinebluff Police Department, and the Moore County Sheriff’s Office.
