Bicyclist airlifted after accident

A male bicyclist was airlifted after an accident in Southern Pines around 10:15 a.m. on Thursday.

According to officials, the cyclist was riding across U.S. 1 from Murray Hill Road when he turned left onto U.S. 1 North when he was hit by a pickup truck traveling from Council Way. 

Southern Pines Fire and Rescue crews had to extricate the man from underneath the pickup truck. EMS transported him to Memorial Park in Southern Pines, where he was airlifted to a trauma center. 

The man’s condition is unknown. The driver of the truck was evaluated on the scene and released.

Multiple motorists ran to render aid before first responders arrived. 

The Southern Pines Police Department is investigating the accident. 

U.S. 1 southbound traffic was diverted to Murrey Hill Road for some time.
