Campfire destroys shed and truck

Sunday morning, a family was awakened to a devastating loss. A fire in their backyard was destroying a shed and burning a truck.

Emergency units were first dispatched to an outside fire in the area just before 7 a.m. Shortly after, the call was upgraded to a structure fire. The fire was located behind a residence on Rabbit Trail off Raymar Lane and Vass-Carthage Road near Vass.

Responding units advised they could see heavy smoke from over a mile away. They arrived on the scene to a large shed fully involved in flames. Due to the location down a long dirt road, tankers were used to haul water in from the main road to supply water to a fire engine and brush truck. The shed was a total loss, and a GMC truck was also heavily damaged by the fire.

According to officials on scene, the fire originated from a campfire the night before that the homeowner thought they had fully extinguished.

There were no injuries reported with the fire, and two dogs on the property were also unharmed.

Responding to the scene were Cypress Pointe Fire Department, Whispering Pines Fire Department, Southern Pines Fire Department, N.C. Forestry and Moore County Sheriff’s Office.
