Carthage crash claims life of woman

A crash outside of Carthage claimed the life of an Aberdeen woman on Monday afternoon.

First responders were called to Kelly Plantation Road for a vehicle seen upside down in Richland Creek. When they arrived, they found the single occupant of a Nissan Sentra still in the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash and says the driver came around a curve to a one-lane bridge, slammed on the brakes while veering off the right side of the road, crashing into the creek.

Kelly Plantation Road was shut down at Coles Mill Road and Hinson Road for several hours.

Troopers say they are unsure why the driver slammed on the brakes, but speed could have been a factor. The investigation continues.

Responding to the scene were High Falls Fire and Rescue, Carthage Fire and Rescue, Moore County EMS, N.C. State Highway Patrol, and Moore County Sheriff’s Department.
