DOT projects to begin in summer

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has several projects that will begin in the summer that will impact Moore County. Below are the major projects:

N.C. 211 from U.S. 15-501 — Road widening is planned on N.C. 211 from U.S. 15-501 in Aberdeen to Mockingbird Hill Road in Raeford. It will expand the route to a four-lane divided road. Work is wrapping up to acquire right of way, clear roadsides and move dry utilities. The road work is scheduled for the fall and is estimated to take multiple years to complete as it involves 16 miles of roadway.

U.S. 1 and U.S. 15-501 “super street” — Creating a “super street” along U.S. 1 and U.S. 15-501 in Southern Pines and Aberdeen will change road access by limiting left turns and improving intersections. The project, also known as a “reduced conflict intersection” or “synchronized street,” will involve creating a center island to divide each roadway with a series of U-turn bulbs added for access across the road. It is expected to take over two years to finish.

The project will impact U.S. 1 in two places: between Roseland Road and the U.S. 15-501 intersection in Aberdeen and between Knight Street and Old U.S. 1 in Southern Pines. It will impact U.S. 15-501 between the U.S. 1 intersection in Aberdeen and Brucewood Road in Southern Pines.

Water and sewer lines were recently moved off North Poplar Street to accommodate a larger Southern Pines waterline that needed to move away from the U.S. 1 footprint. DOT anticipates clearing and moving dry utilities in August.

N.C. 5 — A road widening is planned on N.C. 5 between the U.S. 1 intersection in Aberdeen and the Trotter Road intersection in Pinehurst. The plan is to create a four-lane road between U.S. 1 and Sandpit Road and then a three-lane road from Sandpit Road to the Trotter Road intersection. Pre-construction is planned to start in August.

N.C. 211—The 5726 Project on N.C. Highway 211 in West End will widen 4.8 miles of 211 from two to four lanes between N.C. 73 and Holly Grove School Road.
