A driver was transported to the hospital Saturday night after crashing her vehicle in Carthage.

The single-vehicle crash occurred just before 7:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 15-501 southbound at the crossover with Monroe Street.

According to authorities at the scene, the vehicle had been reported to dispatch just minutes earlier for “careless and reckless” driving due to swerving.

An officer with the Carthage Police Department was nearby and spotted the vehicle, but by the time he turned around, the woman had traveled several hundred yards the wrong way on Monroe Street before crashing into a ditch at the crossover intersection. The impact dragged a large concrete drain cover several feet before the vehicle came to a stop.

After being evaluated by EMS at the scene, she was transported to Moore Regional Hospital for further treatment.

The Chevrolet Trailblazer she was driving sustained minimal exterior damage apart from a blown tire. Airbags had deployed.

Southbound U.S. Highway 15-501 was shut down at the crossover intersection while crews worked the scene and removed the vehicle.

Responding units included the Carthage Fire Department, Moore County EMS and Carthage Police Department.
