The SUV was completely in the water, with the back of the vehicle feet away from land. The elderly male driver was able to get out of the car and hang on to the outside of it until he was rescued. The elderly female passenger climbed into the back of the SUV for more air space until she was rescued.

A witness said the SUV was turning left while exiting the parking lot. Another car turned into the entrance, and the SUV swerved to miss the car and crashed into the pond.
