A high speed police pursuit ended when the suspect crashed into a tree and attempted to flee on foot. The chase began when the Highway Patrol attempted to stop a speeding vehicle on 15-501 North of Pinehurst.

The vehicle refused to stop and fled at a high rate reaching 110 miles per hour. As the vehicle came down Midland Road near the Knollwood entrance in Southern Pines, the driver of the dark colored Audi A6 turned at a high rate of speed and crashed into a tree.

The driver fled on foot but was apprehended just a short distance away from the vehicle. The driver was examined by EMS but refused transport to the hospital.

The officers involved in the chase had all backed down their speed and kept the vehicle in their sight until it eventually crashed. Southern Pines and Pinehurst Police officers had also responded to the chase and were assisting the highway patrol with apprehension.

The driver has been identified as Stephone Covington, age 32. He has been charged with speeding 110 in a 35, possession of marijuana, careless and reckless,  and felony speeding to elude arrest.

Responding to the scene were Moore County EMS, Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, NC Highway Patrol, Southern Pines Police Department, and Pinehurst Police Department.
