Moped driver critical after being hit by truck

UPDATE: The man passed away from his injuries.

A moped driver was airlifted in critical condition after being struck while riding on U.S. Highway 1 near Vass. The wreck occurred near the Dunrovin Country Store Monday around 9:30 p.m.

The moped driver was traveling north toward Vass when the driver of a pickup truck struck the moped from behind. The impact sent the moped off the road and into a ditch. The truck driver called 911 and remained with the man until emergency crews arrived.

Due to the man’s extensive injuries, a medevac helicopter was called. Tarheel 2 responded from its Aberdeen base and landed in a field beside the crash site. They remained on the scene for an extended time, working to stabilize the patient. He was then flown to the UNC trauma center.

Highway Patrol was on the scene and is investigating the accident.
