A hit-and-run crash on Wednesday night in Southern Pines sent a motorcycle rider to a trauma center and shut down one southbound lane of U.S. Highway 1. The collision happened shortly before 6 p.m. just north of the Midland Road exit.
According to authorities on scene, witnesses stated that a white Nissan SUV had collided with a Yamaha motorcycle causing the male rider to crash into a nearby ditch.
The Nissan did not stop and continued driving after striking the motorcyclist, said officials.
After being evaluated at the scene, the motorcycle rider was transported to a landing zone established at Memorial Park in Southern Pines and was airlifted to a trauma center.
His condition is currently unknown.
One lane of southbound U.S. Highway 1 was shut down while crews worked the scene, causing significant delays in the evening commute.
The Southern Pines Police Department was on the scene investigating.
Responding units included the Southern Pines Fire Department, Moore County EMS, and Southern Pines Police Department.
