A motorcyclist passed away after being struck during a three-vehicle collision in Vass on Friday. The crash happened in the 100 block of Union Church Road between U.S. Highway 1 Business and Maple Lawn Lane around 4:45 p.m.
According to officials on scene, a Mazda SUV traveling west on Union Church Road attempted to make a left turn into a driveway. The driver failed to yield to two motorcycles traveling east. One of the motorcyclists narrowly missed the vehicle, but the second was unable to avoid a collision and crashed into the passenger side of the vehicle.
The impact caused the motorcyclist to be ejected into the oncoming lane of traffic, where he was then struck by a Honda CR-V.
Both the Harley-Davidson motorcycle and the Mazda sustained significant damage.
Air care was immediately requested by emergency personnel upon their arrival on the scene, but transportation by helicopter was not possible due to inclement weather.
The motorcyclist was instead transported to Moore Regional Hospital via ambulance in critical condition but later passed away. His name was not released.Â
There were no other injuries reported.
A portion of Union Church Road was completely shut down for an extended period of time while crews worked the scene.
North Carolina State Highway Patrol was on scene assisting with the investigation.
Responding units were Cypress Pointe Fire Department, Moore County EMS, Vass Police Department, and N.C. Highway Patrol.
