One person has died following a horrific three-car accident at the intersection of Hwy 211 and Murdocksville Road in Pinehurst Saturday.
Lawrence Eugene Shoemaker, 91, from Pinehurst, pulled into the path of a vehicle as he was traveling across 211 from McKenzie Road, according to Pinehurst Police Department. A second car then collided with a third vehicle.
The accident occurred at 4:00 pm and shut down 211 traffic heading east to the traffic circle from the Murdocksville Rd intersection and also one lane of traffic heading west while emergency crews worked. All three vehicles had extensive damage with debris littering the highway.
Shoemaker was initially pinned in the vehicle unconscious and a medivac helicopter was called. Emergency crews used hydraulic tools to gain access to the driver.
While being extricated from the vehicle, his condition deteriorated and CPR was started at the scene. This necessitated the cancellation of the helicopter, and the victim was transported to the hospital just down the road. The elderly man was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at Moore Regional. The drivers of the other two vehicles did not require transportation to the hospital.
Pinehurst Police is investigating the accident. Responding to the scene were Pinehurst Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, and Pinehurst Police Department.
