Overturned dump truck loses load in Carthage

A dump truck carrying asphalt overturned and lost its load in Carthage on Thursday afternoon. The single-vehicle crash happened on N.C. 22 near Michael Road and blocked one lane of the road, forcing traffic to be rerouted around the scene.

According to North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the truck deviated from the roadway, lost control, and was not able to correct itself before tipping over. It came to rest on its side in the roadway near Nick’s Greenway, spilling asphalt along the shoulder and blocking traffic from passing.

Radio traffic indicated that units arriving on scene initially checked air care, but no helicopters were currently available. The driver was instead taken by ambulance to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation was called to assess the scene and assist with cleanup, which will be a long and extensive effort.

Crews worked to clear the debris, assess the damage, and remove the vehicle as traffic in the area was detoured.
