Traffic stop leads to arrest for methamphetamine, fentanyl possession

A 27-year-old Aberdeen man is facing drug charges following a traffic stop in Southern Pines.

Southern Pines Chief of Police Nick Polidori said in a press release the department’s patrol division pulled Joshua Cunningham’s vehicle over on Highway 1, near W. Wisconsin Avenue, for expired vehicle registration and insurance stop on Friday, Jan. 27.

“Upon the officer’s approach of the vehicle, the driver Joshua Dean Cunningham appeared noticeably distraught and was unable to produce his vehicle’s registration or proof of valid insurance,” said Polidori. “Upon further investigation, Joshua Dean Cunningham revealed that he possessed quantities of Methamphetamine and Fentanyl, which were located and seized by the arresting officer.”

The suspect was charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of a scheduled II controlled substance (fentanyl).

His bond was set at $5,000. He is due in court on Feb. 22 and is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
