Two bitten by fox in Southern Pines

Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields reports in a news advisory that on Saturday, July 5, Animal Services deputies were dispatched to a fox bite incident on Duncan Road near May Street in Southern Pines.

Upon arrival, deputies spoke with a female victim who reported being bitten by a fox while running along Duncan Road. Despite an extensive search, the animal was not located.

On Monday, July 7, deputies responded to a second fox-related incident on Crestview Road, also in Southern Pines. A woman was reportedly attacked while trying to protect her pet from an aggressive fox. During the altercation, the woman was able to kill the fox.

While the two locations are approximately half a mile apart, it is uncertain whether the same fox was involved in both incidents. The fox from the Crestview Road attack was sent to the North Carolina State Laboratory in Raleigh, where it tested positive for rabies.

Sheriff Fields urges residents in the Southern Pines area to remain vigilant, especially when outdoors with pets. Rabies is a highly contagious and dangerous disease, and the fox may have come into contact with other wildlife in the area.

If you witness unusual wildlife behavior or encounter an aggressive animal, contact local authorities immediately.
