Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields is notifying residents of two confirmed cases of rabies involving a raccoon in the Vass area and a bat in the Whispering Pines area of Moore County.
On September 29, testing confirmed that both animals were positive for rabies. The cases are separate and involve two different areas of the county, reports Fields in a press release.
Fields urges residents, particularly those in the Vass and Whispering Pines areas, to remain vigilant and take appropriate precautions to protect themselves and their pets. Residents should avoid approaching or handling wildlife that appears sick, injured, unusually aggressive, disoriented, or otherwise exhibits abnormal behavior.
Anyone who observes an animal exhibiting suspicious behavior is encouraged to contact Moore County Sheriff’s Office Animal Services at (910) 947-2858.
Residents are also reminded to ensure their pets’ rabies vaccinations are current and to avoid allowing pets to come into contact with wildlife.
