A woman escaped serious injury after crashing her SUV in Southern Pines Wednesday night. The single-vehicle accident happened on Murray Hill Road in front of Longview Apartments shortly after 7 p.m.
The driver of a Ford Edge lost control, grazing a power pole and striking a fence before overturning. The impact ripped the rear passenger wheel completely off the car and nearly severed the exhaust from under the vehicle.
Several citizens in the area helped free the woman from the vehicle, which was on its side. The driver managed to get the rear hatch open and crawled out of the car with help from the good samaritans.Â
The woman was the only occupant and was checked out and released by EMS. She was then arrested and charged with DWI.
Murray Hill Road was shut down for a brief period while crews worked and the roadway could be cleared. Southern Pines Police Department was on scene investigating the accident. Duke Energy was dispatched to the scene also to check the power pole.
Responding to the scene were Southern Pines Fire Department, Southern Pines Police Department and Moore County EMS.
