A man from Jackson Springs died from a medical episode while driving in Southern Pines on Monday afternoon.
According to investigators, the man was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee on Morganton Road near Pinecrest Plaza. The driver suffered a medical emergency and lost consciousness.
The Jeep rear-ended a Nissan and veered off the right side of the road over a curb. A Buick Enclave was also clipped by the Jeep while stopped at a stop sign coming out of the plaza. The Jeep stopped in bushes near the Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa parking lot.
The driver of the Jeep was unresponsive when the Southern Pines Fire Department arrived, and he was pronounced dead at the scene by Moore County paramedics. Authorities did not release his name.
One occupant of the Nissan was taken by ambulance to Moore Regional Hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the Buick was checked out at the scene.
The right lane of Morganton Road was closed during the investigation by Southern Pines Police.
