A five-car accident in front of Cracker Barrel Friday backed up traffic in both directions on Highway 15-501 during the lunch hour rush. The accident occurred in the right-hand northbound lane and in the turning lane going into the State Employees Credit Union.

The accident appeared to be the result of a rear-end collision chain reaction. Two of the vehicles suffered extensive damage.

A Hyundai Elantra, at the back of the accident, suffered extensive front end damage, and a Kia Optima, near the front of the cars, had extensive front and rear damage.

No serious injuries were reported in the accident.

The northbound traffic was initially shut down, but later one lane opened around the crash site and traffic was slowed for an extended period.

Responding to the scene were Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, Southern Pines and Aberdeen Police Departments.
