Derrick Clouston has been promoted from Deputy Fire Chief of Pinehurst to Fire Chief. The previous Fire Chief, Carlton Cole, was promoted to Assistant Village Manager in June.
This promotion marks a significant milestone in Clouston’s career in fire and emergency services.
“Derrick brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to community safety, which aligns perfectly with our values and goals,” said Village Manager Jeff Sanborn. “His proven leadership and innovative approach to fire service will undoubtedly enhance our department’s ability to serve and protect our residents effectively. We look forward to the positive impact he will make in his new role.”
Clouston’s career in the fire service began in 1987 as a volunteer with the Stoney Point Fire Department in Cumberland County. Over the years, he has demonstrated leadership and expertise, serving with dedication and distinction in various capacities. He worked for five years with the Fayetteville Fire Department, focusing on special operations, and retired in 2020 as a Deputy Director with the North Carolina Office of State Fire Marshal. During his tenure there, he oversaw fire/rescue programs, including training, ratings, and grants/governmental services.
In addition to his career with the Pinehurst Fire Department, Clouston holds multiple roles that underscore his commitment to the fire service. He is a faculty member at Purdue Global University, the Assistant Chief with the East Side Volunteer Fire Department in Randolph County, and the Accreditation Manager for the Stoney Point Fire Department. His involvement also includes serving on the North Carolina Fire and Rescue Commission’s Certification Board and contributing to several national and state fire safety organizations.
Clouston’s contributions have earned him accolades, including the Ronnie Jack Coleman Leadership Legacy Award and recognition as a Lifetime Member of the Association of Rescue and EMS. His credentials include a master’s degree in public administration with an emphasis on emergency management, graduation from the NFA Executive Fire Officer Program, and various certifications, including Chief Fire Officer Designee and Chief Training Officer Designee.
“The Village of Pinehurst is confident that Chief Clouston’s extensive experience, commitment to excellence, and leadership skills will continue to enhance the safety and well-being of our community,” said Sanborn. “Please join us in congratulating Chief Derrick Clouston on his well-deserved promotion.”
