Aberdeen debuts new police station

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Wednesday at the new Aberdeen Police Station.

The $5.8 million facility is over 18,000 square feet housed on the same property as the old police station on U.S. Highway 1. The old 5,200 square-foot police station was renovated to use for more space. It was constructed in 1992 and has become overcrowded and outdated as Aberdeen’s population has more than doubled since then. The police force moved to a rented facility downtown on Poplar Street to help speed construction and reduce costs.

The new building is designed with expansion in mind. Its design also allows for the installation of a 911 call center if the town decides to provide its own call dispatching, as opposed to depending on the county.

Tours were given to guests who attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The Aberdeen mayor, commissioners, and other community leaders spoke at the event.

The town adopted a tax increase to provide funding for the building.

Aberdeen officials held a groundbreaking ceremony in October 2020.
