Pinehurst library, archives turning new page

Progress continues on two major projects working toward preserving Pinehurst’s history while expanding and modernizing its library and archival resources.

The Given Memorial Library and Tufts Archives continue to undergo major changes, with updated facilities planned to better serve residents and visitors through library services and educational opportunities.

According to Mayor Patrick Pizzella, the projects will usher in a new era for two longtime community resources.

“The Given Memorial Library and the Tufts Archives are undergoing significant changes and modernization, ushering in a new era in our historic Village of Pinehurst,” Pizzella said in a statement to Sandhills Sentinel.

The new Given Memorial Library building is under construction on Magnolia Avenue, a few hundred yards from Pinehurst Village Hall. The 2.2-acre site is a substantial increase from the library’s original 0.63-acre location.

The new facility, scheduled to open in spring 2027, will feature 30 designated parking spaces, compared with no dedicated parking at the previous location for the past 60 years. The building will also be fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, with a 140% increase in square footage.

Meanwhile, the Tufts Archives will expand into the entire existing Given Memorial Library building next to the Village Green. The move will provide a 59% increase in space for historical displays and meetings, along with a small pantry to support events and conferences.

Plans also include a Village of Pinehurst History Museum, while the George P. Lane Welcome Center will relocate from the Theater Building to the expanded archives.

Pizzella credited the Village Council, staff, and planning efforts over the past five years for making the projects possible without additional taxpayer costs.

“Thanks to a focused Council, careful planning, and a talented staff of professionals, these last 5 years, both the new library and archives will be paid for in full without a tax increase or issuing any debt,” he said.
