An Aberdeen man was arrested Saturday after a woman reportedly fled her home following an assault and sought help at a nearby convenience store, according to the Aberdeen Police Department.
Officers responded to Circle K on Oct. 31 after receiving a report of an aggravated assault and strangulation that had occurred nearby.
At the scene, officers found a woman who had left her home and received help from a bystander who brought her to the gas station. The woman, who was in a relationship with Anthony Lackey, 46, of Aberdeen, told officers he had assaulted and strangled her inside their home.
“Upon arrival, officers located a female victim who had fled her home and was brought to the gas station by a bystander who had offered her assistance and rendered her aid,” writes the Aberdeen Police Department in a press release. “The victim, who was in a dating relationship with Lackey, advised that she was assaulted and strangled by him in their home. She also advised she tried to leave many times during the assault, but he would not allow her to.”
Officers said they corroborated her account through her statements and visible injuries. Moore County EMS treated the woman at the scene.
Lackey was located inside the gas station and arrested by officers. He was charged with felony assault by strangulation, misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, assault on a female, and false imprisonment.
Lackey was taken before a Moore County magistrate and held without bond.
All charges are allegations, and Lackey is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
