Moving violation leads to arrest

Aberdeen Police officers discovered a man had an outstanding order for arrest for assault with a deadly weapon when they pulled his vehicle over on Oct. 16 for a moving violation and expired registration and inspection.

Aberdeen Police Chief Brian Chavis said in a press release that Jose Estrada, of Rowland, N.C., is facing charges of felony possession of a stolen firearm, misdemeanor carrying a concealed weapon, misdemeanor possession of marijuana, and misdemeanor possession of marijuana paraphernalia.

Chavis said there was an “obvious odor of marijuana coming from within the vehicle,” and Estrada confirmed he had marijuana in the vehicle.

In addition, officers were advised that Estrada had an outstanding order for arrest out of Robeson County for assault with a deadly weapon.

“Upon removing Estrada from the driver’s seat, they located a handgun concealed in the compartment of the driver’s side door,” said Chavis. “Officers then conducted a search of the vehicle and located marijuana in two locations within the vehicle. Officers ran the firearm’s serial number through dispatch, and they were advised the firearm was entered as a stolen gun.”

Estrada was arrested and taken before a Moore County magistrate, where he received a $2,000 secured bond for his new charges and a $500 secured bond for his outstanding charges from Robeson County.
