Man extradited to Moore County in alleged check fraud case

A 49-year-old Maggie Valley man was extradited to Moore County after investigators linked him to a stolen and altered check belonging to a Pinehurst resident.

Robert Wilson was served with outstanding arrest warrants Oct. 14 at the Moore County Detention Center after being extradited from South Carolina, according to the Pinehurst Police Department.

The investigation began in May 2026 after a Pinehurst resident reported that a check mailed from their home had been stolen, altered, and fraudulently cashed in South Carolina.

Through a search warrant, a review of financial records, and surveillance footage, detectives identified Wilson as the suspect.

On Aug. 5, detectives obtained warrants charging Wilson with one count of obtaining property by false pretenses and one count of uttering a forged instrument.

The charges stem from the alleged check fraud involving the Pinehurst resident.

All charges are allegations, and Wilson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
