A new sub shop just opened in Aberdeen on Highway 5, but the family behind it is already a familiar part of the community. Community Subs opened its doors on July 14, next to Community Thrift Store. Both businesses belong to long-time residents, Mark and Teresa Remmenga. Community Thrift has been in operation for five years, with another location on Highway 1 near Big Lots.
The three businesses are operated and managed by family members. Mark manages Community Subs, while his wife, Teresa, runs Community Thrift on Highway 5, and their daughter, Elisabeth, runs the Community Thrift on Highway 1.
When asked what made him want to open a sub shop, Mark told Sandhills Sentinel, “The Subway closed back in December, and the unit was open, and all of their sub shop equipment was up for sale.” With a background in food service, Mark decided to take advantage of the opportunity.
The couple moved to the area when Longhorn Steakhouse opened, and Mark was brought in as the manager. He managed other Longhorn locations across the state before the move. He served the Southern Pines location for nine years before deciding to move on to his next venture – Community Thrift.
Mark is big on community, stating that he was most excited to do more for the area. He loves the thrift store because it allows him to serve people, work with charities, and help those who might be starting over. Over the years, he’s had the privilege of observing his regulars go through various stages of life, from dating to getting married to having kids.
The location is ideal because lovers of Community Thrift can go right next door to Community Subs to fill their bellies after they finish shopping in the plaza.
The menu has a wider range of items than most sub shops, as it serves soups and salads. There are also menu items for younger diners, such as pizza and macaroni. From Tuesday through Saturday, they offer a special sub of the day, and they have also added a pick two option to the menu.
Community Subs is located at 1680 Highway 5 in Aberdeen. Their hours are Tuesday-Saturday from 11 to 7 p.m.
