Animal Services temporarily suspends canine intakes

Sheriff Ronnie Fields announced temporary intake procedural changes at the Moore County Animal Shelter.

“Due to our commitment to providing the best service to our citizens, we are temporarily stopping all “canine owner surrender” intake at the animal shelter beginning March 7th, 2024, and “canine stray surrender” intake on March 11th, 2024, to undergo essential renovations on our floors,” said Fields in a news advisory. “We will remain open to accepting all feline surrenders and to handle essential services, animal emergencies, bite cases, etc. This decision ensures a safer and more comfortable environment for both the animals and our dedicated staff.”

Chief Deputy Andy Conway highlighted this need at the February Moore County Board of Commissioners meeting after the shelter received an unannounced state inspection.

“While this may cause a brief inconvenience, it is crucial for maintaining the high standards of cleanliness and hygiene necessary for the well-being of our animals,” said Fields. “We appreciate the understanding and support of our community during this time, and we look forward to welcoming both new arrivals and visitors back once the renovations are complete.”
